Assam Cane & Bamboo

In Assam, bamboo is not a material — it is a way of life. We eat it, build with it, and weave our homes from it.

I weave jappi hats, sitting stools (mora) and baskets using cane and bamboo split by hand into strips thinner than a fingernail. The pattern holds everything together with no nail or glue.

Young people were leaving the craft for the cities. I run a small unit so that a weaver can earn here, in the village, with the river outside the door.
