My family has sat at the pit loom in Madanpura, Varanasi for as long as anyone remembers. I tied my first warp at eleven.
A single Banarasi sari can take fifteen to forty days — the kadhua technique means every motif is woven separately, by hand, never floated behind the cloth. The gold zari is real; the patience is realer.
Powerlooms copy our patterns in a day. What they cannot copy is the weight of a true handloom sari when it falls, or the small irregularities that prove a human sat here.
