Pochampally Ikat Weaves

In Pochampally, near Hyderabad, we dye the thread before we weave — this is ikat, where the pattern lives in the yarn itself.

We tie and resist-dye the warp and weft to a plan held only in the weaver’s head, then align them on the loom so the design appears as if by magic. A blurred edge to each motif is the proof it is true ikat.

Our village is a whole GI cluster of weavers. I weave saris and yardage and sell direct so more of the price reaches the loom.
